Coaching Icons Brown and Vashon Honored

March 8: Basketball Coaching legends Bob Brown and Paul Vashon were honored as the recipients of the Wooden Award of Excellence at the 2024 MABC and McDonald's All Star Banquet in Bangor. The Award is named after long time successful coach of the UCLA men's basketball team, the late John Wooden. The award is presented based on the traits of Education, Longevity, Character, Service,  and Excellence. 

Brown coached for fifty years, including forty-two as a head coach, and won over 600 games. bob brownHis high school coaching duties in Maine included stops at Rockland HS, Williams HS in Oakland, South Portland HS, Edward Little HS, Bonny Eagle HS, and Cheverus HS. Bob also coached at the college level at the University of Southern Maine, Boston University, and St. Anselms College.
 
His high school teams won four Gold Balls and seven Regional Championships. His college teams made it to the NCAA tournament 4 times and the 1988-89 USM team reached the Final Four, coming in third.
 
Vashon coached varsity girls basketball at both Messalonskee High School in Oakland and Cony High School in Augusta. paul vashonWhile coaching at Cony in his native town, Paul led the Rams to 11 Eastern Maine Championships and 7 State titles. He won 451 games and his teams qualified for the post season in 23 consecutive years.
Paul is a master basketball technician and one of the first coaches to embrace the three point shot in girls basketball. He has served as the Director of the Capital City Basketball Clinic in Augusta.
